Serving in Worship

Opportunities to Serve During Worship

There are several ways in which you can volunteer in preperation of or during out weekly or specal worship services.  Below please find a list of volunteer opportunities as a description of each.  Should you wish to volunteer please call Audrey Stevens at 815-385-4030 or e-mail her at astevens@shepherdofhills.org.  Please feel free to volunteer for one or several of the worship times of your choice.   Services are held Saturdays at 4:30 p.m. and on Sundays at 8:00 a.m., 9:15 a.m., and 10:45 a.m.   We sincerely appreciate everyone's willingness to help and will try to accommodate your availability.

Greeter

Greeting people is a fun and easy way to get to know your fellow members. Greeting people with a warm smile and a simple "good morning" is a wonderful way to welcome them to our church each Sunday morning. Greeters are asked to arrive 15 minutes before the service and stand near the access doors, welcoming people to worship. We appreciate your willingness to volunteer for this vital part of our Sunday worship.

Usher

Ushers are very important to a proper, worshipful experience for the congregation. We are most appreciative to those of you who are willing to service in this capacity. Ushering assignments for the Sunday morning worship services are for a specific month and include one service time during all of the Sundays within that month. Each ushering team will consist of at least four individuals. Ushers are asked to arrive at least 15 minutes prior to their scheduled service so they can hand out bulletins to arriving parishioners.

Liturgist

Liturgists are volunteers trained to assist the Pastor in the weekly Sunday worship setting. Among the things they do: read the lessons and certain prayers for that Sunday, help serve communion on Communion Sundays. Lessons and prayers are mailed to the liturgist before their scheduled Sunday so they may have time to read them over and practice should they wish to do so. We sincerely appreciate your help with serving in our worship services. We hope serving as a Liturgist will be a fulfilling experience.

Communion Server
Communion servers are trained volunteers who assist the Pastor and Liturgist in serving the bread and wine on Communion Sundays. We have Communion on the 1st and 3rd Sundays of each month at all of the worship services. Communion server schedules are done quarterly.
On occasion, we will have Communion during special worship times throughout the year. Being a Communion server is very rewarding. We encourage high school students to assist as well. We hope you will consider joining us in this very fulfilling experience.

Altar Guild
Altar Guild volunteers do a variety of duties as they prepare our church for worship. Some of those duties include dusting, preparing the altar, setting up for Baptisms, changing candles and parliaments. In addition, volunteers also help with preparing the wine and bread for Communion Sundays.

Bulletin Assembly
The Bulletin Assembler will be asked to come to the church on Thursday after 4:00 p.m. to pickup the bulletin and inserts. You may take the bulletins home with you or assemble them at the church if a room is available. During regular worship times we have 400 printed and folded bulletins. We ask that the assembler simply place that week's inserts inside the bulletins. Inserts will always include an attendance card, possibly an envelope and one to several half sheets of paper.
Please place one of each insert inside of each bulletin and return them to the church no later than 4:00 p.m. on Saturday so we may have them in plenty of time for the 6:30 p.m. worship service.

During Christmas, Easter and any other special worship time in which we will have a large quantity of bulletins we will assign two assemblers that particular week.

This is a great family project and actually goes by pretty quickly. The schedule is typically created at the beginning of the year, watch the weekly bulletin for an insert in which you can sign up for one or many weeks. We will do our very best to accommodate everyone's request however, requests will be filled on a first come, first served basis. A final schedule will be mailed to all assigned volunteers.

Grass Cutter
The grass cutters are asked to volunteer to cut an area of the church property. A schedule is generated each year in which you can volunteer once, multiple times or weekly. We divide the church grounds into three areas and ask that we have three volunteers per week. The grass would need to be cut on either Thursday, Friday or Saturday depending upon the weather and church schedule in reference to funerals, weddings or other events. T
he church has two riding lawn mowers and a hand mower available for your use. There is a leaf blower as well to clean up around church entrances. We ask that children under the age of 16 do not operate riding lawn mowers.

Coffee / Tea Maker
People who volunteer for this activity are helping members each Sunday morning as they get their morning coffee and visit with other members of the congregation gathering in Fellowship Hall following each worship service.
Coffee maker volunteers are asked to have the coffee plugged in by 8:00 a.m. on Sunday mornings as it takes about one hour to brew. Coffee supplies and instructions are located in the kitchen for your convenience. We ask that coffee makers also put the condiments, cups and on occasion tea out as well. Volunteers are sent sign up schedules for the entire year and they may choose which weekends and which months they would like to serve. Once schedules are finalized, volunteers are sent the yearly schedule showing when they are assigned. Reminder letters are sent prior to the week in which you are scheduled to setup coffee.

Refreshment Host(ess)
The refreshment host or hostess has two ways in which they can volunteer to provide refreshments to be enjoyed after each worship service.

  1. You may choose to "sponsor" refreshments in which case donut holes and cookies will be ordered from the bakery. The donut holes and cookies will be in the kitchen and marked with each service time. You are asked to put them on trays and place them in the Fellowship Hall before or immediately after the service you are sponsoring. Trays are available in the kitchen for your use. The refreshment sponsorship is only $25.00 per service.
  2. You may choose to bring in refreshments. We ask you to provide 80 to 100 home baked or store bought items. Trays and other service bowls are available in the kitchen for your use. Please put your refreshments in Fellowship Hall before or immediately after the service you chose.

We generally have one volunteer for the 8:00 a.m. and 10:45 a.m. services and two volunteers for the 9:15 a.m. service. With your support, we are able to provide a special time of fellowship following each of our Sunday worship services.
